Counseling Program - Direct Services

Support Groups

Support Groups are different from group therapy.  A support group has a lesson each week and activities to reinforce the concept.  Students are encouraged to share experiences that they have in common, in order to get the sense of mutual understanding and support from each other.  Students are asked not to bring up sensitive personal or family information.  If inappropriate information is being divulged, the counselor redirects the discussion and makes arrangements to meet privately with the student.

Support Group sessions for children typically meet once a week for six to ten weeks.  Meetings are 60 to 90 minutes in length, depending on the age group.

The ideal group size is from three to six students.

Students must be screened by the counselor prior to inclusion in the group.  Written parent permission is necessary.

Universal themes such as "Grief" or "Self Esteem" are appropriate for this type of group,  as well as "Anger Management", perhaps "Learning Differences".
