Counseling Program -
Direct Services
Individual Counseling
Counselors assist students in
establishing personal-social and academic goals, involving parents and teachers
when appropriate.
School counseling is short term and
solution focused. Any student requiring on going therapy would be referred
to a local provider.
If the child is going to see the
counselor more than once or twice, written consent of the parent or guardian is
required.
Individual sessions are usually
scheduled once a week for 20 minutes. The number of sessions will vary
depending on the situation.
Appointments are planned with students
so that they do not miss core subjects. Students usually chose Music,
Library, PE, Computer, Art or Recess time to meet.
Confidentiality is of utmost
importance. What is discussed in therapy is not discussed with parents or
teachers without consent of the student. The only exception is in
situations where the student is threatening bodily harm to self or others.
Meetings with parents and/or teachers
regarding the child's overall progress at school are encouraged. Family
meetings, a parent-teacher conference, and student/parent joint sessions can be
arranged before or after school.
