Classroom Guidance
The guidance curriculum consists of
structured developmental
lessons presented
through classroom and group activities Kindergarten - Eighth Grade.
The purpose of guidance lessons is to
provide all students at all grade levels with knowledge and assistance in
acquiring and using life skills.
Topics for classroom guidance depend on the
needs of a particular group or class. Use of student and teacher surveys
at each grade level would ensure that relevant student-centered lessons are
designed. Sample Guidance
Units:
- Under the broad domain of
"Knowledge of Self and Others", lessons that focus on understanding
emotions, handling anger and stress, and skills for making and keeping
friends would be taught.
- Another unit might be called
"Coping With Loss", in which students learn about death and the bereavement
process, family changes including divorce, and everyday changes which are
often perceived as losses.
- a "School Success" unit would
cover topics like homework hassles, study skills, learning differences, and
multiple intelligences.
- A unit called "Interpersonal
Relationships" could include communication skills, conflict resolution,
bullying and assertiveness training.
- Other lessons about drug and
alcohol abuse prevention, brain function and mental health, character
education, media violence, and strategies for problem solving are also
available.
