There are 14 different routes for each day. You can sign up for one day or more. This is a great service project to do with your kids. For the next several weekends there will be a sign-up sheet on the table in the Gathering Space, along with an information sheet and copies of each Route, 1 thru 14, (with names, addresses and a map). You can look through the Routes and see which one you might be more comfortable doing. Annual Mission Appeal At all Masses next weekend, June 14/15, our parish will have its annual mission appeal. There will be a special second collection for this appeal at all Masses. This year the Diocesan Office for the Missions has assigned Fr. Tony Pilli, an assistant priest at Blessed Sacrament Parish here in Springfield, to be the speaker at all Masses. Fr. Pilli, a priest from the Diocese of Guntar (India) will make an appeal for an organization called “SERVE.” This name stands for Socio Economic Reconstruction of Village through Education. SERVE is a non-profit and non-political registered voluntary organization, started in a remote Catholic village in 1992 with a vision to reach the unreached, the rural and tribal people who are living in utter poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, oppression, caste discrimination, and malnutrition. SERVE believes that education is very important for children because they are the future. A number of children under 14 are employed in farmlands, hotels and factories. Parents are compelled to send their children to work because they cannot make ends meet with their earnings. People in the villages are very poor and depend on daily wages for their sustenance. There is water scarcity in the summer and they have to go a long distance to get water. Women and children are especially vulnerable due to poor health and hygiene conditions. To address these needs, SERVE is working for the empowerment of rural people, especially women and children. Self-Help Groups have been started to: encourage people to send their children to school and to help with school fees and clothing; educate orphans in the villages; motivate parents to bring their school drop-outs back to the school; and to give women proper orientation and information on health issues. Accomplishing these goals takes well-planned programs and finances. SERVE does not have sufficient funds to reach out to these deserving people. Therefore, we appeal to your kindness and generosity in this endeavor of serving God’s children. No donation is too small, and all donations are greatly appreciated.
