WHY SHOULD YOUR CHILD ATTEND PSR?

According to the General Directory for Catechesis the
fundamental tasks of catechesis are:

Promoting knowledge of the faith
Liturgical education
Moral education
Teaching prayer
Education for community life
Missionary initiation.

2223 Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children.  They bear witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity, and disinterested service are the rule.  The home is well suited for education in the virtues.  This requires an apprenticeship in self-denial, sound judgment, and self-mastery-the preconditions of true freedom.  Parents should teach their children to subordinate the "material and instinctual dimensions to interior and spiritual ones."  Parents have the grave responsibility to give good example to their children.  By knowing how to acknowledge their own failing to their children, parents will be better able to guide and correct them.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

Mission Statement:

Saint Agnes Parish School of Religion (PSR) provides religious instruction in the Christian Faith within the context of the Roman Catholic Church for children of Saint Agnes Parish of Grades Kindergarten through Eighth who do not attend Saint Agnes School.

Saint Agnes PSR:

  • Encourages the expectation that PSR families to attend Mass weekly.
  • Encourages PSR families to regularly receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Saturday afternoon or by appointment. See the Church bulletin for details.
  • Encourages PSR families to pray regularly; for example, at meals, before the children go to bed, etc., "Prayers are caught, not taught."

Saint Agnes PSR has a staff of volunteer teachers, aides, and office assistants. Teachers are reimbursed for certification in the Diocese of Springfield, Illinois Catechist Formation Process. The PSR conducts regularly scheduled classes on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:45PM. Unless otherwise specified, regular classes are held in the Saint Agnes School building. There are about 32 sessions and are comprised of graded classes, liturgical celebrations, and seasonal events. Attendance records are kept and participation is expected.

Since instruction time is limited, it is very important that your child arrive on time (in the school by 6:30PM). If that is not possible, please contact the teacher. Change of Schedule: If there is a change in scheduled events from PSR, you will be notified via the church bulletin and/or a memo given to your child.

Policy of Missed Classes and Absences:

Just as in all other classes, the PSR catechesis builds on each lesson, such that regular class attendance is required. Parents should do all in their ability to keep regular PSR classes a priority in their child's Christian formation. If a student is ill and cannot attend class, the parent should contact the teacher and obtain the work that was covered in the missed class. Obviously for illness or serious reasons, children may be absent from time to time. However, more than three absences in a semester will result in a student being placed on probation. A student who is on probation may not be absent more than two classes the next semester. A student on probation who is absent more than two classes must retake the entire year.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures:

Students arrive between 6:15-6:30 PM. They enter and leave the school from the south exit by the gym. Upon arrival they may use the lavatory and get a drink. They assemble in the hallway. At 6:30 PM, an office aide directs them to theirDrop Off/Pick Up Directions! respective classrooms. If the teacher/aide has not arrived, they are to wait in the hallway outside the classroom. During class time, parents are welcome to wait for their children in the school library. Students in Grades K - 3 are to be picked up from inside the school at their classroom.   Parents are asked not to peer inside the classroom doors while waiting for dismissal because it is very distracting to the students and teacher. Students in Grades 4 - 8 will be dismissed from the south exit by the gym.  If you are not at the school by 8:00 PM, your children are instructed to wait for you inside the school. Please come into the school to pick up your child. They will be inside the school at the south exit or in the library.

To exit the parking lot by the school please drive completely around the school to the far north exit on Amos Street.

At dismissal please avoid parking and leaving your car in the "pick-up" lane near the school (gym) exit to wait for your children.

Registration:

Registration for the next year is held in the Spring prior to the first class of the Fall Session - We ask for your cooperation in registering your children ahead of time.  We need to plan for the necessary materials for each child and it also will avoid confusion on the first day of class.  If you are new to the program and your child was not baptized at Saint Agnes, please provide a copy of their Baptismal Certificate.

Church Etiquette: Students are encouraged to maintain a quiet, prayerful atmosphere when in the Church, for the Church is the very dwelling of God.  We emphasize the proper reception of the Eucharist; for example, walking up the aisle with hands folded, receiving Communion reverently, returning to place and kneeling to pray, etc.  The parents and family, by their own reverence, are the best teachers for their children.

Mission Education: Students are enrolled in the Holy Childhood Association.  The small membership fee is paid for from the book fee. A newsletter is distributed three times a year.

Advent Collection: Each year the PSR collects items and money to give to a local charity. This is voluntary.

Children Stewardship: The students are encouraged to participate in Stewardship through the giving of their Time, Talent, and Treasure.

Altar Servers : Boys and Girls in Grades 6 - 8 are invited to become servers. These grades will be notified when the training session will be conducted.

Share the Word: Students from Grades K - 4 are invited to "Share the Word" during the 10:00AM Sunday Mass.  Details will be in the bulletin.

Join the 11:30 AM Sunday Choir:  PSR students are invited to join the 11:30AM Sunday Ensemble.  Practice is Thursday evenings.  If interested, please call Sr. Francis Mary at the Rectory Office 793-1330.

The Saint Agnes PSR program is financially supported through the general Saint Agnes Church fund.   A book fee supplied by the parents for each student covers the cost of books, supplies and staff training, etc.

Questions regarding the program: should be directed to the Coordinator by phone.  Written communications are to be delivered during class time or the Parish Rectory Office.  Saint Agnes Church, 245 North Amos Avenue, Springfield, Illinois 62702, (217) 793-1330.

Saint Agnes PSR uses the revised Coming To Faith religion text from Sadlier, Inc., as its main instructional tool for Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. The Keystone edition has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This is the same religion text that is used in Saint Agnes School. The PSR uses the version adapted for Parish programs. This encourages parental support in a variety of ways, one of which is the "Faith, Alive and At Home" component of Coming To Faith. The students take home the lessons learned that week and asked to review it with their parents during the week. Parents are also asked to help their child learn their formal prayers such as the Our Father, Hail Mary, Apostles Creed, Act of Contrition, etc.
