Saint Agnes Cub Scout Pack #32 Pinewood Derby Help Sheet

The Pack 32 Pinewood Derby is scheduled for Sunday, January
13, 2007. For new scouts and for other "novices" woodworkers, we have compiled a few aids and reference materials to help you and your scout make this event an enjoyable experience. See the web site list on the Join The Fun! notification or check out the following books: "How To Book Formula for Building and Racing Pine Cars", "What Every Parent Should Know About Pinewood Derby Cars and More" and “Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Guidebook”.
We will be conducting a pre-race dry run session on Saturday, January
12, 2007. We will be setting up the tracks allowing all participants the chance to weigh their cars and test them on the track. There will be race veterans there to answer any questions or possibly assist in any last minute car adjustments or modifications. The race is on Sunday, January
13, 2007 and weigh-in is from Noon to 1PM. The race starts at 1:00PM and all scouts are asked to wear their uniform.
Please follow the Pack Rules (See Below) and not those supplied with the car kits or those obtained from any of the sources listed on the “Join The Fun” sheet. These rules have been compiled and adopted by the Pack Committee specifically to address issues that have surfaced in the past. Please remember that this is a Scout event meant to teach, not a venue for showcasing the adult's abilities!
In addition, if there is interest, we will be scheduling a Pinewood Derby Car Workshop to assist anyone with limited access to power tools or for anyone wanting some practical advise on the building of cars. We would hope that this workshop could aid some of the parents and scouts in the mechanics of building a car, and allow them to participate in the event instead of missing it for lack of "expertise" or proper tools.
We will also be soliciting volunteers to help with the workshop, pre-race dry run and race day duties.

Pinewood Derby Rules
1. All cars must pass inspection to qualify for the race. The inspection points are as follows:
a) The car must have been made during the current year. The year must be on the car. Each scout will be allowed to enter only one car.
b) The car should be a joint project of the scout and an adult helper. This is an opportunity for a boy to use his imagination and learn new skills with tools. THE SCOUT SHOULD DO AT LEAST HALF OF THE DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND FINISHING.
c) Use the Pinewood Derby Car Kit that is provided. The wood block, wheels, and axles from the kit must be used. No precut kits are allowed.
d) The car must not exceed 7 inches in length or 2¾ inches in total width, wheels included. Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces. Weights may be built into or added to the car to reach the 5-ounce limit. Weights must be permanently attached with glue or screws, or be built-in.
e) Wheels shall be installed with the nail axles provided in cut grooves on the block. All four wheels must be in contact with the track. No modifications of wheel diameter or width is allowed. Wheels may be sanded for uniformity, but may not be modified to a razor edge. Wheel bearings, washers. bushings, all types of springs, and starting devices are prohibited.
f) All parts may be sanded, polished, and painted. Decals, stickers, drivers, engines, and other accessories may be added. All accessories must fit within the official dimensions above. Only religious, scouting, or sports markings or objects will be permitted on the car. If a part of the car falls off during the race, it may not be replaced. A car must have four wheels in order to race. No loose parts will be allowed.
g) Only dry graphite powder may be used for lubrication. Graphite must be applied prior to registration. The cars in the final run-off will be allowed to apply additional graphite. Graphite should only be applied to the axle and inside of wheel.
2. All cars will be registered, inspected and placed on the holding table prior to the race. The Cubmaster or his designee will have the final decision for inspection.
3. The double elimination method of racing will be used. This allows each scout to race at least twice.
4. When the heat is announced the scout will get his car from the holding table and take it to the starter. The starter will place the car in the starting block. The scout will then proceed to the finish line. After the heat, the scout should return his car to the holding table.
5. If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, or has any other problem, the heat will be rerun. If the same car gets into trouble on the rerun, the car is disqualified and loses the heat. The car cannot race any more, but keeps its standing.
6. No camera flashes are allowed during the race.
7. Trophies will be given for first, second, third, and fourth places and for best of show.
8. A copy of design ideas can be purchased at the Scout Office.
9. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN.
